What is collagen?

Collagen is a protein found in our body and made up of amino acids which assist in the structure of connective tissue, skin, bones, and cartilage. We call it the “fountain of youth” protein as its main goal is to keep us looking plump, firm, and youthful! Did you know that as we age, we lose about 1% of collagen per year? This means that by the age of 35 we’ve lost up to 15% of collagen. Keep in mind that genetics and lifestyle play a role in the amount and rate at which your body and skin lose collagen. Whatever you feed your body internally may reflect on the outside!

How can we stimulate collagen production?

If you’ve been following trends, you may already know the popularity behind collagen supplements. While these claim to help your body restore its strength from the inside and assist in hair, skin, and nail improvement, there is little evidence to support this and many over the counter supplements lack FDA approval. The goal behind many anti-aging skincare and aesthetic treatments is collagen stimulation. This can be achieved through multiple approaches–chemical or physical. If you’re looking to stimulate collagen, think about ingredients that increase cell turnover, like retinol and chemical peels. Another way to stimulate collagen is through micro-injury to the skin. Some of our favorite collagen stimulating aesthetic treatments include microneedling with platelet rich plasma such as SkinPen and Morpheus8, Aquagold Microchanneling, and our newest addition: Sculptra.

What is Sculptra?

Sculptra is a poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) collagen biostimulator, which stimulates your natural biological process of collagen production. This gradually restores the deep, underlying structure of the skin to diminish facial wrinkles and correct deficiencies of facial contouring. In other words, it helps to jumpstart your skin’s collagen yielding natural results. Sculptra is the only FDA-approved biodegradable injectable and has indications for nasolabial folds, marionette lines, and other facial wrinkles.

How does Sculptra work?

The syrupy gel-like PLLA microparticles are injected into the skin which then stimulates the replacement of lost collagen. Over time, collagen production rebuilds the skin’s structure, creating a subtle, refined correction of wrinkles. While it can take 2-3 treatments for optimal restoration (1-2 vials at each appointment), results can last up to 2 years or longer.
