It’s spooky season at Thistle Medical Aesthetics, and we’re here to scare away skincare rumors one myth-bust at a time! Think Ghostbusters…but skincare and cute mauve scrubs. Let’s spill some tea on a few common skincare myths we hear and see everywhere, that you have probably been misinformed about.
Myth #1: My Botox will look the same for the entire duration of three to four months.
Okay, here’s the real deal: Botox isn’t a linear journey. Imagine it like a bell curve instead! You’ll likely start seeing results around three to four days after your injection, and the full effect usually kicks in by the two-week mark. You’ll enjoy that smooth look for about eight weeks before things start to move again. Just keep in mind that everyone’s results are different! Factors such as how many units you receive, your muscle strength, metabolism, and even your activity level can all impact how long your Botox lasts.
Myth #2: Dermaplaning makes hair grow back darker and thicker.
This one is such a common misconception! Dermaplaning is all about gently exfoliating dead skin cells and that fine, soft peach fuzz (the vellus hair). Trust us, it doesn’t change how your hair grows back! The hair is still going to be the same fine texture and color. Sometimes, when it first grows back, it might feel a bit coarser because of the blunt angle from dermaplaning and appear darker but it’ll soften up again before you know it.
Myth #3: Botox will fix all my skincare concerns.
Botox is our favorite for smoothing out fine lines and wrinkles but it’s not a one stop solution for everything else! If you’re serious about your skin, it’s best to have a game plan in place. Investing in a comprehensive annual treatment plan that incorporates multiple modalities to target all layers of the skin, muscle, bone, and fat yields far greater results than solely coming in for your Botox treatments every three months. Incorporating regenerative medicine, biostimulators, radio frequency, along with injectables is always our recommendation!
Myth #4: I don’t need anti-aging products until I’m older.
Here’s the uncomfortable truth: waiting until you’re older to take care of your skin is like waiting for your car to break down before you start maintaining it. The same can be applied to your skin! We always recommend starting early. Being proactive versus reactive about your skin means dealing with fine lines and hyperpigmentation before they become harder and more time consuming to treat. Plus, if you keep up with a solid routine now– like using collagen-stimulating treatments, peptides, and daily SPF, that means fewer restorative treatments (and $$$ saved) later on. Girl math, right?
Myth #5: Dermal filler will make me look “fake” or “overdone.”
This is a common concern we hear about dermal fillers! To put it in perspective, one syringe of filler is the size of a blueberry. It takes many sessions and many syringes of filler to look “overdone.” The unfortunate thing about the internet is that only “bad” injections go viral. Here’s what doesn’t get enough attention– the beautiful, natural work that goes unnoticed. We always preach that the best aesthetic changes are the ones that are subtle and hard to put a finger on. You’re still you but better! Aesthetics should never be a “one-size-fits-all” approach as we each have features and skin concerns unique to us. Our goal is to aim for gradual improvements rather than dramatic changes, which helps maintain a natural appearance. Having that initial consultation, helps us understand your goals and concerns in depth and allows us to create a customized treatment plan, ensuring we achieve tasteful results.
So, there you go! A little skincare insider myth-busting to keep you in the know.
