What Are Dermal Fillers?
Dermal fillers are injectable volume enhancers made with hyaluronic acid, a substance naturally found in the body, that help to lift, accentuate, and contour certain areas of the face for a more youthful appearance. They can correct asymmetry, balanced facial features, and restore lost volume by treating the lips, cheeks, jawline, chin, and around the mouth. Think of them as a subtle, non-surgical option for someone looking to make a change to their appearance without surgery.

Before Treatment
In preparation for your filler treatment, we recommend that you refrain from taking any blood thinning medications or supplements such as Aspirin, Ibuprofen, vitamin E, and fish oil. We also ask that you avoid any alcohol consumption at least 48 hours prior to your treatment. We recommend taking arnica montana tablets (oral) that you can get over the counter starting five to seven days prior to your treatment. Eating fresh pineapple can also help with bruising as it has natural enzymes, called bromelain, that have anti-inflammatory properties.
During Treatment
At the beginning of your filler appointment, we will review your medical history, get you consented for the procedure, and take your before and after photos for your chart. We will then discuss what your specific goals are for your treatment and assess which filler product we will use to create your desired outcome! A topical numbing cream is applied for about 10-15 minutes so the treatment is as comfortable as possible for you. There’s lidocaine that’s infused into the filler so as we are injecting you it gets a little more numb as the treatment goes on.
After Treatment
Results can be seen immediately after. Swelling and bruising can be expected and may take up to 2-3 weeks to subside. A topical Arnica Montana product can help reduce any bruising post-treatment. Additionally, no facial treatments like waxing, laser, facials, massages, or chemical peels for the next two weeks. Depending on your metabolism and lifestyle, most clients may enjoy their results for 6-12 months before needing another touchup!
Results & Timeline
Results are visible immediately and can last anywhere from six months to over a year, depending on the type of filler used and individual factors such as metabolism and lifestyle. You may expect swelling and bruising and may take 2-3 weeks to settle. We always recommend scheduling accordingly with filler around important events.
To ensure you’re thrilled with the outcome, we’ll schedule a follow-up appointment two weeks after your initial treatment to assess the area and consider adding more product if needed to achieve your desired outcome.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a dermal filler appointment take?
Dermal filler appointments are typically 45 minutes long. The first 15-20 minutes is reviewing medical history and allowing time for numbing. However, more time may be allotted if multiple syringes or full-facial balancing is planned.
How soon can I expect results?
Dermal filler adds volume immediately. However, you may experience some swelling and bruising right after, which is completely normal. You can expect the dermal filler to integrate with your skin/facial tissue over a period of about 2 weeks. Therefore, we don’t recommend scheduling your appointment the night before a big event.
How many treatments or syringes will I need?
Treatment is client-specific and depends on a variety of factors including volume loss and aesthetic goals. Your aesthetic provider will be happy to discuss your treatment options and formulate a customized plan for you!
How long will the dermal filler last?
Dermal filler typically lasts about 6-12 months per the manufacturer reports. However, duration is dependent on your body’s metabolism and will vary from client to client.
Do you do under eye filler?
Under eye filler can be a great option but it’s not for everyone! It’s most effective for those with significant volume loss or deeper under-eye hollows. Our team of aesthetic providers have a thorough understanding of facial anatomy when determining whether someone is a good candidate. Beginning with an in-depth consultation allows us to assess your unique features and decide whether filler, or perhaps a regenerative approach like PRF, will give you the most natural and beautiful result.
What if I don’t like how it looks?
If you’re not absolutely in LOVE with your results, it is reversible. All of the dermal filler products we carry are hyaluronic acid based which are reversible with the use of a special enzyme called hyaluronidase.
What type of filler will I need?
We carry the full line of Restylane, RHA products and selection of some Juvederm filler products. The type of filler and brand depends on the area treated, which your aesthetic provider will discuss with you in detail during your initial consultation.
Who is it not ideal for?
Unfortunately, this treatment is not suitable for expecting or breastfeeding mommas.
What do I do if I notice unusual bruising?
If you notice bruising that’s spreading or any unusual pain or heat, please reach out to us immediately at info@thistlemedicalaesthetics.com or call 540-783-8209.
