It’s 2022, the stigma behind injectables is a thing of the past. Nowadays, it’s becoming more common for people to receive Botox or Dysport to help boost confidence and prevent aging. There’s nothing wrong with a little investing in yourself! Today, most women (and men) are investing their time, energy, and money into aesthetic treatments. However, the big question many ask is when should I start? This is where we preach preventative tox!

What is Botox or Dysport and how do they work?

Botox has become the universal term for what is medically known as neuromodulators. Botox and Dysport are both neuromodulators that block the contraction of targeted muscles to treat the dynamic lines- fine lines and wrinkles that are formed due to repeated facial expression and muscle movement. When the underlying muscle is relaxed, the skin smooths. The results post-treatment can typically be seen in 7-10 days and may last up to 3-4 months.

So, when should I start?

Botox/Dysport is FDA approved for people over the age of 18. However, your age is only a number. Our bodies all age differently which is what makes us all unique! Do you notice lines/wrinkles when you’re not making facial movements- even at rest? Do you notice your makeup not sitting on your skin like it used to (creasing in the fine lines)? Where are you noticing signs of aging on your parents? (Your aging process may be hereditary!) All can be determining factors of when you can think about starting your aesthetic journey. Beginning your treatment is based on when you begin to see wrinkles/expression lines. The age of when this occurs is different for everyone!

Treating earlier, rather than later, gives us the opportunity to smooth expression lines before they become deep set and static (present at rest). The deeper the wrinkle the more products or treatments you may need. The earlier age you start and with regular and continued treatment, you may need lower dosage over time thus slowing down the aging process and saving you money in the long run.

How do I know this is the right treatment for me?

Botox/Dysport is only a temporary fix! Typically, results may last up to 3-4 months. Depending on the amount of units used and how strong your muscle is, how your body metabolizes the product, and/or if you maintain an active lifestyle can all factor in the results of the treatment.

We always recommend finding an aesthetic nurse that understands your lifestyle and budget to come up with the best treatment plan for you. Friendly reminder to keep in mind that Botox/Dysport is different for everyone. The amount of units that your bestie received may not be the same number of units best suited for you.

The importance of at-home maintenance

Receiving aesthetic treatments such as Botox/Dysport injections are great steps to take to prevent the aging process however, if you’re not preserving the results of your treatments with an at home skincare routine it’s like taking a step back in the anti-aging process! (Think about it like this: you can’t expect to have a beautiful smile by going to your dentist appointment twice a year but not brushing your teeth everyday.) The combination of preventative treatments with regular use of sunscreen and early retinol use for improved anti-aging effects.

Wrapping it all up

Keep in mind age has very little to do with how fast you actually age. The lines and wrinkles you currently have, your skin type, and/or your family history can all play apart in your aging process. Starting now versus starting later will help the preventative aging process and keep you looking youthful.
